Note: OCONUS per diem rates change monthly based on currency exchange rates and seasonality. Make sure to add a note on your site that these use example baseline rates!
(Disclaimer: The figures below use estimated example rates of $300 for Max Lodging and $150 for M&IE. You must look up the exact, current rates for your travel dates using the Per Diem lookup tool above.)
Example 1: Single Service Member
If you are traveling alone, you receive 100% of the lodging rate and 65% of the M&IE rate.
Lodging Cap: $300 x 100% = $300/day (Maximum you can be reimbursed for your hotel room)
M&IE Allowance: $150 x 65% = $97.50/day (Flat rate you receive for food)
Total Maximum Daily TLA: $397.50
Example 2: Service Member with Two Dependents
(e.g., A spouse and one child under the age of 12) Your first dependent brings your base rate to 100% for both categories. The child under 12 adds an additional 25%, making your total multiplier 125%.
Lodging Cap: $300 x 125% = $375/day (Maximum you can be reimbursed for your hotel room)
M&IE Allowance: $150 x 125% = $187.50/day (Flat rate you receive for food)
Total Maximum Daily TLA: $562.50
Important Reminder: If the family in Example 2 stays in a hotel that only costs $250 a night, their Lodging reimbursement will be capped at $250, not the $375 maximum. However, they will still receive the full $187.50 for food regardless of their actual grocery or restaurant bills.
