Vehicles: Ship or Buy?

One of the first things you will need to decide is whether to ship, store, or sell your vehicles. You may import two vehicles (if accompanied) without paying customs fees, but only one vehicle may be shipped at government expense.

Right-Hand Steering in a Left-Hand Environment The UK drives on the left. It can be tough to pass in a left-hand-drive (U.S.) vehicle since you can’t easily look around the vehicle in front of you. However, many people drive U.S. cars here with no problems once they adjust.

Buying a Car in the UK Used cars are reasonably priced, though automatics are less common. Use postcode HA6 1NZ (near the base) when searching online. When negotiating, always check when the MOT (safety inspection) is due—you don't want to buy a car with an expiring MOT. You will also have to pay UK road tax based on engine size/emissions.

Shipping Your U.S. Vehicle

Warranties & Insurance Check with your manufacturer to see if your warranty is valid overseas (Ford and Toyota usually are, but you pay upfront and file for reimbursement). Prior to PCS, contact your auto insurance (like USAA) to get an international UK-specific insurance card. You cannot ship your car without this.

Delivery & Pickup You will get an email when your vehicle is ready for pickup at Brandon, Suffolk (about two hours away). You can pay out-of-pocket for a delivery service to bring it to you. If picking it up yourself, try to schedule your MOT inspection at a garage for the same day.

The USAFE Driving Test After housing check-in, visit the Vehicle Registration Office (VRO) at Blenheim Crescent. You must pass the USAFE driving test before you can operate any POV or rental car. Passing this test is required to get your customs tax exemption forms.

MOT Inspection & U.S. Car Modifications Unless you bought a UK car, your U.S. vehicle will need modifications to pass the mandatory annual MOT inspection. Take your car to a local garage (like Ickenham Motor Company) for this work.

• Required Light Mods: Headlamps must be adjusted to dip left. Front parking lights must be white. Front and rear turn signals must be amber. A rear fog lamp must be wired to a switch on your dashboard.

Registering at the VRO Once you pass the MOT, submit your Title, UK insurance, MOT certificate, and lien-holder permission letter to the VRO. You will eventually receive your UK registration (V5 form) in the mail. Take this to an auto parts store (like Halfords) to have your physical UK license plates made.
